Abstract

Sentence is compilation of words that has purpose or complete meaning.Proverb is a sentence that is containing advice, warning or truth. Each word ofproverb has the meaning; because the word is the implementation of sound thatutterance to describe the idea, object and behavior. Here, the writer which is doneentitle Semantic Analysis of Proverb "Well done is better than well said" byBenjamin Franklin, wants to discuss about meaning in semantic theory which focus inlexical and metaphorical meaning. The writer tries to find the characteristics ofBenjamin's proverb from his biography. Most of people know that Benjamin Franklinis famous people. He is an author, an inventor and the president of Pennsylvania.Therefore, this thesis is aimed to describe and analyze the meaning of proverb,especially lexical and metaphorical meaning and also analyze the characteristics of it.This research used qualitative approach in analyzing data of research. After analyzing,the writer found that the lexical meaning of the proverb is doing something well isgood than just saying it well and one of the metaphorical meaning of proverb issomeone focuses in his/her job and dislike talk anymore. Then, she got threecharacteristics from Benjamin's proverb; they are spirit, brave and optimism.
