Abstract
This study analyzed the effectiveness of students' speaking ability by using directmethod. The objectives of the study are (1) How is the profile of students' speakingability before implementation of direct method at the tenth grade students of SMA N 1Suruh? (2) How is the profile of students' speaking ability after implementation ofdirect method at the tenth grade students of SMA N I Suruh?, and (3) How can theeffectiveness of using direct method improve speaking ability at tenth grade of SMA NI Suruh?. The methodology of the study is coll aborative classroom action research. Inthis research the writer was the teacher and assisted by an observer. She notes all of theprocess in learning activities. To find out the improvement of students' speaking abilityshe used test, namely pre test and post test. She used three cycles, in each cyclecomprised of pre test and post test, implementation of the action, observation, andreflection. The study show that the students involved activity in teaching learningprocess, they were more encourage and confident to speak in English than before.Based on field note in each meeting, it can be found that the effectiveness of usingdirect method has benefit to improve student's speaking ability in class. The result ofthis action research is the majority of mean scores of pre test and post test are 67,67 to69,71 in cycle I, the mean scores of pre test and post test are 68,76 to 72,67 in cycle 2and the mean scores of pre test and post test are 72,57 to 74,19 in cycle 3.
