Abstract

The title of this thesis is A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF REGISTERSUSED IN SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE (SMS), a systemic functional analysisof speaking by Hymes. The problems that were studied in the thesis are, (I). Whatare the form of the register used in SMS?, (2). What are the meaning of registerused in SMS?, (3). What are the function of the register used in SMS?.In accordance to the problem, the thesis discussed about, the form of theregister, the meaning of register and the function of the register used in ShortMessage Service (SMS).the problem had begun to interest the researcher since shefound that some of the registers in short message service was not easy to beunderstood. Especially to the person who was never or rarely to use the SMS,registers of SMS as a discourse is still a strange phenomenon.The research is intended to be a deseriptive qualitative research. The goalis merely to describe the problems that had been stated before. The object of theresearch is words, phrases, and sentences used in Short Message Service (SMS) ofthe discourse of registers. It must be confirmed that the obtained data are thcregisters of Short Message Service only the English register. For that purpose, theresearcher deliberately obtained the data from registers used in Short MessageService.From the analysis, it can be concluded that there are three reasons of usingregister in sending a Short Message Service. First is to save the cost, second is toexpress their feeling, and thirdis to make an effective and efficientcommunication. The benefits or realizing those three findings was that thereceiver of the message can understand, cooperate, and give a response to the uscdof the registers. An enhanced and elaborated understanding will help the receiverto comprehend those registers.The achievement of this research is expected to give some contributions tofurther study of register especially by systemic functional analysis of SPEAKING.Practically, those findings can also be used by other researcher who are interestedin analyzing the variety of language, especially the register used in Short MessageService.
