Abstract

This research is aimed to describe about an error analysis in using simple past tense in writing recount text based on surface strategy taxonomy made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Syubbanul Wathon in the academic year 2019/ 2020. The objectives of this research were to describe the types of errors, to know the total of errors and to find out the dominant errors of using simple past tense in recount text based on surface strategy taxonomy written by the eleventh grade students of SMA Syubbanul Wathon in the academic year 2019/ 2020.This research used qualitative research with the technique of collecting data used test and documentation. The subject of this research was the students of XI Science Fauzu 5 which has 31 students.The result of this research showed that there are four types of errors that occur on the use of simple past tense in English recount text. they are error of omission, error of addition, error of misformation and error of misordering. Based on the research finding, it shows that the students made total of 135 errors. 24.44% or 33 in error of omission, 14.81% or 20 in error of addition, 53.33% or amount 72 errors in error of misformation, and 7.40% or 10 in error of misordering. The most dominant error students made is error of misformation with the percentage is 53.33% or amount 72 errors. Error of misformation relates to the use of the wrong form of the morpheme or structure. Most of the students forgot to use the second verbs or past forms in their sentences or they still used to be is, am, and are.
