Abstract

Grice’s maxim is usually being violated especially to create humor in a humor show. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to show the violation maxim that is used by Trevor Noah in his stand-up comedy performance entitled “It’s My Culture”, to find the dominant violation maxim that is used by Trevor Noah, and the reason Trevor Noah did the dominant violation maxim in his stand-up comedy performance. The metodology of this research was qualitative research. Documentation method became the tehcnique of data collection in this research. The researcher did the data analysis technique in four steps, they were; identification, classifying/unitizing, tabulating, and describing. the researcher used Grice’s theory to analyze the violation maxims. The researcher found all of four Grice’s maxims are violated by Trevor Noah. There were 40 violations maxim of quantity, 43 violations maxim of quality, 37 violations maxim of relation, and 14 violations maxim of manner. In conclusion the violation maxim of quality is the dominant maxim occurs in the stand-up comedy video. The reason of Trevor Noah in doing the dominant violation maxim is to create the humor or make humorous situation, and to amuse the audience so they laughed.
