Abstract

ABSTRACT Oktaviani, Rizka. 2020. An Analysis of the Students’ Ability and Difficulties in Changing Active to Passive Voice. A Graduating Paper, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, English Education Department, State Institute for Islamic Studies Salatiga. Counselor: Nur Muthmainnah, M.Pd. The objectives of the study are to know the students’ ability and difficulties in changing active to passive voice at the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2019/2020. The method of this research was the mixed method. It employed qualitative and quantitative methods to collect and analyze the data. This research was conducted to 34 students. The techniques of collecting data were written tests to find out the students’ ability and questionnaire to find out the students’ difficulties. The writer finds that the students’ ability average score is 52.94 categorized into the weak category. The test result to know the students’ difficulties shows that 8.82% or 3 students are in very good, 11.76% or 4 students are in good, 26.47% or 9 students are in pretty good, 23.52% or 8 students are in weak, and 29.41% or 10 students are in poor category. Besides that, there are five difficulties that students faced: the use of tenses, the use of to be/ auxiliary verb, the change of subject and object, the change of the verb, and the placement ‘by’ word.
