Abstract
ABSTRACT Maulani, Ulan. 2021. “AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ INTEREST AND ATTITUDE IN LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH WHATSAPP GROUP IN THE ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF IAIN SALATIGA ”. Counselor: Muhamad Hasbi, M.A. The purposes of this study are (a) To know the students’ interest in learning English through WhatsApp Group in the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga, (b) To find out the students’ attitude during learning English through WhatsApp Group in the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga, (c) To find out the factors which influence the students’ interest and attitude in learning English through WhatsApp Group in the English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. This research is a qualitative research. The subjects of this study are 15 sixth semester students and 15 fourth semester students of English Education Department at IAIN Salatiga. Questionnaire and interview were used to collect the data. The data that has been collected was then analyzed to classify the students’ interest and attitude in learning English through WhatsApp group. The findings show that students dominantly have a good interest and attitude in learning English through WhatsApp group. There are five main factors that influence the students’ interest and attitude namely (1) the teachers’ teaching method or strategy (2) the features of WhatsApp, (3) students’ laziness, (4) the network, and (5) students’ personality. Meanwhile, the teachers’ effort to enhance students’ interest is to develop learning strategies to be more innovative and creative, whereas the students need to be more disciplined.
