Abstract

Alhamdulillahirobbil ‘alaimiin. All praise and thanks be to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, who gives us strength, whom we seek for protection, and who has made this book Understanding Sociolinguistics possible. This book is intended to provide students with basic concepts of sociolinguistics. It may also be used as a supplementary text for university students in a systematic way with some examples in Indonesian context. It is clear that this book draws on variety of sources which can be seen in the bibliography. Our greatest debt is to the sources we cited and mentioned there. Our deep gratitude also goes to the Teacher Training and Education Faculty of IAIN Salatiga who has given as an opportunity to publish this book. On a personal level, Noor and Faizal could never have completed this book without the love and support of Noor’s husband and daughters and Faizal’s wife and daughters; thank you for always being there.
