Abstract

This study analyzed compound words that are found in sport news of The Jakarta Post. Compound word is defined as two or more words which are combined into one unit a perceptible lexical meaning. This study analyzed how forms of compound word formed and identifying what kinds of compound word that are found. This study aimed to describe how the English compound word forms in sport news of the Jakarta Post newspaper are formed and to identify the kinds of compound words found in sport news of the Jakarta Post newspaper. This study is descriptive qualitative. In collecting the data, the writer uses collecting articles method. Techniques of analyzing data are classified the data, analyzed the causal factors of compound words, described the interpretations and draw the conclusion. The data are English compound words found in Sport News of The Jakarta Post that was published 1^st - 7^th February 2016. After analyzing datas of English compound words, the writer finds that (1) There are twenty one forms of compound word that are identified as a close compound word. (2) There are seven form of compound word that is identified as hypenated compound word. (3) There are nine form of compound word that is identified as open compound word. The writer find reasons that close compound often to be used, because; (1) Simple meaning. (2) To make the reader of The Jakarta Post more interested to read. (3) To make reading more clear. Since language is arbitrary, it is necessary to conduct continuous research in other to increase the knowledge about phenomena of compound words.
