Abstract

This research was conducted to find the type of politeness strategies used by teacher and students. It also intended to search for the most dominant politeness strategies that used by teacher and students in teaching and learning process.The Objectives of this research are (1) To know the politeness strategy used by the teacher and students in the English class Of SMP N 02 Tengaran (2) To know the most dominant politeness strategies that used by teacher and students in teaching and learning process. The researcher used the theory of Brown And Levinson Face threatening Act. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher found 40 utterance of teacher and 12 utterance of students on teaching and learning process during two observations. The data of students utterance contained 3 data of Bald on record and 9 data of positive politeness. The data of teacher utterance contained 17 data of bald on record , 10 data of positive politeness, 10 data of negative politeness, and 3 data of off record. It means that bald on record strategy was the most used by teacher in the class. As a result, off record was less used by teacher in the class.
