Abstract

The purpose of the study was aimed to explain the goals, the materials, and the approach in teaching writing, and to explain the problem faced by the English teacher in teaching writing. This research was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah Susukan, located in Gentan village, Susukan district, Semarang Regency. The subject of this research was the teachers of SMP Muhammadiyah Susukan. The object of this research were the VIII grade students and the writing teaching approach applied by the SMP Muhammadiyah Susukan teacher in 2021/2022 academic year. The methodology of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected observation, interview, and documentation. The validity of the data technique is the triangulations technique. The result of the research are the objectives of teaching writing at SMP Muhammadiyah Susukan are to improve students’ writing skills, developing students’ language, and to assist students to enhance their abilities and skill. The materials used by the teacher based on the Junior High School’s syllabus especially at the eighth grade. The approach that used in teaching writing at the eighth-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Susukan are Product-Based Approach and Process-Based Approach. There are some problems faced by the English Teacher like lack of motivation and attention of the students, different skills and abilities of the students, for external problem is classroom facilities.
