Abstract

Thoriqii, M. W. C. A. (2023). Fresh-graduate and Experienced Teachers’ Strategies to Improve Students’ English Conversation Skill (Case Study at SMPN 2 Ambarawa in The Academic Year 2022/2023). Counselor: Muhamad Hasbi, M.A. This research aims to find out the fresh-graduate and experienced teachers’ strategies to improve students’ English conversation skill at State Junior High School 2 Ambarawa in the academic year of 2022/2023 and the challenges faced by the teachers when implementing the strategies and how they overcome them. The research subjects in this study are a fresh-graduate and an experienced English teacher of SMPN 2 Ambarawa. This research uses qualitative method research design. In collecting data, researcher conducted interviews, observations, and documentation. The result of this research shows that the fresh-graduate teacher implements five strategies, namely: discussion, group work, “keep students to speak the targeted language”, “build activities in easy language”, and interview. While the experienced teacher applies seven strategies, namely: role play, repetition, group work, discussion, simulation, interview, “keep students to speak the targeted language”. To know if the strategies applied are successful, both of the teachers use some indicators, i.e.: by doing the assessment, by observing the students’ response, and by looking at the students’ expression. The similarity between the fresh-graduate teacher and the experienced teacher is that most of the strategies used by both of the teachers are strategies that are not too complicated in the preparation or in the implementation in classroom activity. The differences between them are: the experienced teacher is better at building comfortable atmosphere to learning English than the fresh-graduate teacher. On other hand, the fresh-graduate teacher is better at combining the strategies applied with the recent learning media than the experienced teacher. The challenges Faced by both of the teachers are with regard to students’ low self-confidence, undisciplined students, students’ low learning capacity, and the curriculum applied. Students’ low self-confidence and undisciplined students are faced by both of the teachers. Which they overcome by doing a personal approach to their students. Students’ low learning capacity is faced by the experienced teacher and she overcomes it is by knowing and treating the students well. The last challenge, the curriculum applied, is faced by the fresh-graduate teacher and she overcomes that challenge by continuing to learn.
