Abstract

The aims of this research were: (1) to find out the students’ difficulties in writing narrative text, (2) to find out the strategies done by the students to overcome those difficulties in writing narrative text. The research subjects were students of class XI MIPA 1 SMAN 1 Gubug. The methodology of this study was qualitative research. The techniques of collecting data was written test and interview. After collecting data, the researcher identified students’ difficulties and strategies done by students. The result of this research, there were: the students had difficulty mostly on grammar, especially simple past tense, using to be, and preposition. But the students also had difficulty on capitalization and punctuation. Concerning the strategies used by students to overcome the problems. First, the students using mind mapping, the technique of connecting ideas in the form of diagrams. Second, using the internet with the technique of opening a web browser, looking for references, then paraphrasing Third, using the picture series with the technique of developing a picture with a short description of what is happening in the picture, and last, using the pyramid with the technique of organizing and developing the story.
