Abstract

This research aims at investigating students’ perceptions on the use of Google Translate in essay writing, the advantages and disadvantages of using Google Translate in essay writing, and the students’ effective strategy to use Google Translate in essay writing. This study applied case study method and gathered data through interview and phone interview. The techniques for analyzing the data were collecting the data, data condensation, data display, and drawing a conclusion. The study was conducted in UIN Salatiga, involving sixteen students in the seventh-semester of the English Education Department in the academic year of 2022/2023. The findings of the research show that students dominantly had positive perception towards Google Translate in the aspect of satisfaction with result, features and willing to use again. Students agree that Google Translate is useful for students who struggle with composing sentence, limited vocabulary, and limited time. The features of Google Translate help students to translate sentences, paragraph and text. The use of Google Translate can help students to develop vocabulary and correct spelling. The finding also showed that Google Translate has disadvantages include grammar error, incorrect translation, and high dependency on Google Translate. This research reveals students strategy to use Google Translate in essay writing are doing pre-editing, post-editing, using Google Translation for partial translation, and translate entire sentence, paragraph or text. The findings suggested that students can use Google Translate in essay writing with awareness of advantages and disadvantages of Google Translate.
