Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the challenges students faced when listening to English podcasts and to find out the strategies they use to overcome the problem. This research was conducted at MAN Salatiga in the academic year 2022/2023. The total of students in the study was 33 students during the observation and 10 of them were taken as representatives in the interviews. This research was conducted on November 15th, 2022. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection techniques were taken from observations and interviews with students of 11th grade Language and 11th grade Language’s English teacher. Data analysis of these research are (1) Data Gathering, (2) Subtraction of data after the data has been acquired, (3) Displays of data After the researchers categorize the data, (4) Draw/verify the conclusion. The results of the study show that the challenges faced by students when listening to English podcasts are limited and unfamiliar vocabulary, speed of speech, cultural differences, accents from native speakers, lack of concentration and motivation, and the quality of recording material. Furthermore, students use strategies to overcome the listening challenges according to their preferences by using their favorite media as learning tools, recording what they hear when listening to English podcasts, and finally working with friends.
