Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the types of code-mixing and code-switching and the reason why teachers used both methods to teach native speakers to learn the Indonesian language the in Indonesian Multi-Language Acquisition Center (IMLAC) Salatiga. The methodology of the research was qualitative research, especially descriptive qualitative. The techniques of collecting data that the researcher used to find out the types of code mixing and code switching plus its reasons are observation, documentation, and interview. The subject of this research was an Indonesian teacher who taught the Indonesian language at the Indonesian Multi-Language Acquisition Center (IMLAC) Salatiga. The outcome that the researcher found is: 1) There are 9 units in the Indonesian Multi-Language Acquisition Center (IMLAC) Salatiga, usually teachers use code-switching in units 1 to unit 3. But most often it's unit 1 because they were learning Indonesian if 2-3 units are less, around 10% to 20%. For units 4-6 even less, around 1-5%, and in units 7-9 almost fully used the Indonesian language in teaching students. 2) The types of code mixing were used the most in the class the main reason to accommodate speakers of different languages besides to save time, as stated by one of the teachers there “Here we are constrained, one class is only a few minutes.” 3) The ability of native speakers to understand the Indonesian language improved a lot better by using code-mixing and code-switching methods because they got the information they needed and became aware of the topic that was being discussed. It can be seen in interview result number 14 about the use of code-switching and code-mixing to improve student abilities.
