Abstract

The purpose of this research are : First, to discover what are English abbreviation that found in Indonesian TikTok users. Second, to identify what are types and the meaning of English abbreviation that found in Indonesian TikTok users. Third, to identify the students perceptions on the use of English abbreviation in Indonesian TikTok users. This research was conducted at May 17th until 21st 2024 located in UIN Salatiga. The subject of this research is 10 students’ from fourth and eighth semester of English education department in UIN Salatiga who had and using TikTok. The methodology of this research was qualitative descriptive. The data validity was the triangulation technique. Data were collected by interview ( directly face to face also online through WhatsApp ) and documentation. The researcher found : First, there are 32 English abbreviation found in TikTok. Second, there are 25 English abbreviations categorized as an initialism, 2 English abbreviations categorized as an acronym and 5 English abbreviations categorized as contraction type one. Majority of students’ explained the meaning of these English abbreviations by word for word and free translation using Indonesian language. Third, 90 % students’ are interested and 10 % students’ aren’t interested in English abrreviation in TikTok. Students’ percieved English abbreviation positively : they reduced time in communication, they could be used in communication effectively, they were also trendy or eye catching, and could be media of learning. Meanwhile, the negative perception are : they caused misunderstanding, they caused miscommunication, and they caused anxiety. Keywords : Perceptions, Abbreviation, TikTok.
