Abstract
This study deals with A Pragmatic Analysis of Deixis Used in Nouman Ali Khan’s Speech Entitled ‘Empowering Goodness in Difficult Times’”. This study aimed at elaborating types and functions of deixis used in Nouman Ali Khan’s speech by Levinson’s theory. This study conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data source taken from Nouman Ali Khan’s speech entitled “Empowering Goodness in Difficult Times” on Official Bayyinah YouTube channel on February 24, 2023. The data were transcribing into the script then analyzed the words, phrases and sentences contained the types and the functions of deixis on Nouman Ali Khan’s speech. The result showed there were five types of deixis and five functions of deixis. The types of deixis found namely person deixis, time deixis, spatial deixis, discourse deixis and social deixis. The result showed 280 utterances for person deixis, 30 utterances for time deixis, 19 utterances for spatial deixis, 130 utterances for discourse deixis, and 37 utterances for social deixis. The functions of deixis found namely locative function, identificational function, discourse management function, expressive function and social function. The result showed 19 utterances for locative function, 280 utterances for identificational function, 130 utterances for discourse management function, 52 utterances for expressive function, and 37 utterances for social function.
