Abstract

The research aims to observe the learning motivation and speaking skills  of seventh grades students at SMP N 1 Sumowono. The research also want to reveal the factors that influencing the students motivation to learn, as well as to show how significant the correlation is. To solve the problem, the researcher correlate it with speaking skills. This research uses a quantitative approach. Also the research is correlational. This research involves a samples of 30 students. The data was collected by research instrument. The instruments to collect motivation data is a questionnaire that consisting of 12 questions. Then collecting speaking skills score by document from the teacher. The data analysis technique in this research use product-moment correlation. The overall data processing use SPSS program. The results of the study show that: (1) the average or mean learning motivation of students in seventh grade at SMP N 1 Sumowono is 35.56, (2) the average or mean learning results of students in seventh grades at SMP N 1 Sumowono are 78.90, and (3) there is a positive and significant relationship of learning motivations with speaking skills of seventh grades students of SMP N 1 Sumowono. It is shown by the count r-value greater than the r-table (0.471>0.361) and the significance value of 0.009, which means less than 0.05 (0.009<0.05). The result found that there was a signification correlation between motivation to learn and speaking skills. Because a higher students motivation make their speaking skills and achievement better than the lower one. The level of motivation is influenced by a number of factors, both from the student himself and from outside. In the study, the main of the problems faced by students are the lack of facilities that can make them interested and the interest to learn speaking, so that low motivation is still the main problem among the students.
