Abstract
Azzahro, Nadira Syifa, 2024. "THE ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH METAPHORICAL EXPRESSION IN 1984 NOVEL BY GEORGE ORWELL”. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN ) Salatiga. Couselor: Dr, Hanung Triyoko, S.S., M. Hum., M.Ed. The research aims to identify and analyze the types and meanings of metaphorical expressions in George Orwell's novel "1984." Specifically, the objectives are to determine these metaphors' dominant type and function. To achieve this, the researcher employs qualitative descriptive methods, which involve gathering and analyzing data to gain insights into the metaphors used in the novel. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Qualitative research explores and understands the meanings that individuals or groups attribute to social or human phenomena. The study identifies thirty-eight instances of metaphors in "1984," categorized into four types: Animal Metaphors (ten data), Concrete to Abstract Metaphors (twenty-five data), Synesthetic Metaphors (eight data), and Anthropomorphic Metaphors (five teen data). The dominant type is the Concrete to Abstract Metaphor, which plays a crucial role in 1984 novel. These metaphors, such as comparing Winston's body to jelly, create vivid imagery that helps readers visualize the characters and the dystopian world. This technique is particularly effective in a science fiction context, where the unfamiliar setting requires a strong visual narrative. The metaphors in "1984" add significant depth to the narrative by symbolizing broader themes and conveying profound emotions. For example, comparing life in Oceania to an unwinnable game captures the hopelessness and perpetual struggle of the characters. These metaphors are integral to the novel, adding depth and cohesion, ultimately enhancing its storytelling and emotional resonance. Keywords: Semantics, Metaphor, George Orwell, 1984 the novel
