Abstract

The objectives of the research describe the implementation of the jigsaw method to improve teaching reading. This research was classified as classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used Pre-Test and Post-Test to determine the improvement of students’ reading comprehension after the implementation of jigsaw method. The subjects of this research were 25 students of 9A at SMP N 3 Salatiga. There were two data collection forms in this study (qualitative and quantitative). The qualitative data were obtained by doing observation and interviewing the students and the English teacher. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were obtained from the students’ reading score of pre-test and post-test. To get the trustworthiness of the data, three triangulation principles were implemented: time triangulation, space triangulation, and investigator triangulation. For the quantitative data, it presents that the pre-test mean is 72, while the post-test mean is 86. The gain score is 13,4. The percentage of students who passed the minimum score (79) in the pre-test is 32%, while the post-test is 88%. The results of the research showed that jigsaw technique was believed to be effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension and students’ participation in reading class.
