Abstract

This research aims to: (1) to know how the implementation of Role-Play technique in improving integrated listening-speaking skills of the tenth-grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Salatiga. (2) to find out the reasons for the improvement of the implementation Role-Play technique in improving integrated listening-speaking skills of the tenth-grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Salatiga. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR), which is implemented in two cycles; each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects of this study were 33 students of class X of the Automotive program. Data collection was carried out through tests (pre-test and post-test), observation sheets, field notes, and documentation (lesson plan, voice recordings, and student assignments). The result showed a significant increase in students’ ability to construct and express opinions orally. The average student post-test score increased from 62.36 in cycle 1 to 76.82 in cycle 2. The percentage of students who reached the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) also increased from 33.33% to 75.76%. This increase is due to the reasons for the improvement, which are providing clearer and more structured instructions, increasing practice and preparation time, adjusting the difficulty level of the role-play scenario, providing vocabulary and an example of conversation model, improved emotional readiness, and group cooperation. This research has a positive impact on the English learning process in vocational high schools, especially in improving students’ ability to construct and express opinions orally in vocational context.
