Abstract

Reading comprehension is an essential skill in language acquisition, and the choice of learning materials plays a critical role in enhancing this skill. Authentic Materials, which consist of real-world texts not specifically designed for language learning, and Created Materials, which are specifically designed for educational purposes, are compared to determine their impact on students' understanding of written content. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using Authentic Materials and Created Materials on reading comprehension among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners with different motivational levels at SMP Pesantren Afaada Boyolali in the academic year 2024/2025. The research employs an experimental design with two groups: an experimental group that received instruction using Authentic Materials and a control group that was taught with Created Materials. Pre-tests and post-tests were administered to measure students’ reading comprehension before and after the intervention. The study also categorized students into three levels of motivation: high, medium, and low, to investigate whether motivation influences the effectiveness of the learning materials. From the data generated, using Authentic Material and Created Material have been proven to be effective for students' reading skills. Meanwhile, the influence of both on students' reading comprehension through students’ motivation has a great influence indirectly. This study provides an overview to teachers that there are still other factors that can affect students' reading comprehension besides motivation that should be researched.
