Abstract

Lailatuzzahroh, Erfina. 2025. “Effectiveness of Duolingo Application in Teaching the Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 2 Pabelan to Improve English Vocabulary in the Academic Year of 2024/2025”. A graduating paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Setia Rini, M.Pd. Vocabulary plays a crucial role in learning English, especially for junior high school students who often face difficulties in mastering it. Traditional teaching methods tend to make vocabulary learning less engaging aims to examine the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in improving students' English vocabulary mastery. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The research was conducted at SMPN 2 Pabelan in the academic year 2024/2025, involving 34 students from class 7E. They were divided into two groups: 18 students in the experimental group using Duolingo and 16 students in the control group using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure vocabulary improvement. The results showed that the average score of the experimental group increased from 81,94 to 90, while the control group improved from 74,69 to 78,75. The t-test and F-test results indicated a significant difference between both groups, with a p-value <0,05. These findings suggest that the Duolingo application is effective in enhancing students’ English vocabulary. Moreover, the app also helped address common learning difficulties such as low motivation and retention problems through its interactive and gamified features.
