Abstract

This study aims to find the relationship among vocabulary difficulty, reading anxiety, and vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of Islamic schools in Simo sub-district in academic year 2024/2025. By conducting quantitative research, vocabulary difficulty questionnaire, reading anxiety questionnaire, and vocabulary mastery test are used as research instrument. It takes 121 students for 3 Islamic schools as participants of the research. The finding shows that although vocabulary difficulty and vocabulary mastery has low correlation and reading anxiety has strong relationship with vocabulary mastery, they has positive and strong correlation simultaneously with vocabulary mastery. In addition, multiple regression analysis result shows coefficient of determination is 0.513. It means vocabulary difficulty and reading anxiety simultaneously impact vocabulary mastery in medium category. Based on the finding, it explain that vocabulary difficulty that is caused by low English proficiency, for instance, lack of vocabulary, grammatical rule, synonym and antonym. While mispronunciation, unfamiliar words, and negative evaluation arise reading anxiety. Both of them simultaneous impacts to students’ English achievement because vocabulary mastery is affected by vocabulary difficulty and reading anxiety.
