Abstract

Azzida Khozainul Muna. 2025. Students’ Perception on the Use of ChatGPT in Writing Essay. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Miftachudin, M.A. This qualitative study explored the perceptions, challenges, and strategies of 6th semester English Education Department students at UIN Salatiga regarding using ChatGPT in writing essays during the 2024/2025 academic year. With the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational settings, ChatGPT has emerged as a widely used tool to support students' academic writing processes. The essay was chosen because it is one of students' most common academic writings. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five students who had experience using ChatGPT as a learning tool for more than six months. Data analysis was conducted through data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing/verification, with data validation through triangulation employed to ensure validity. The findings reveal a predominantly positive perception among students, who consider ChatGPT a helpful companion tool in writing essays for idea generation, grammar improvement, and organization. However, students also identified challenges including irrelevant answers, inaccurate information, difficulty making effective prompts, and dependency on ChatGPT in writing essays. Students' strategies to address these involve using keywords to develop ideas, enhancing grammar, maintaining critical thinking, verifying information with credible sources, using other sources, and paraphrasing to avoid plagiarism. Overall, the study concludes that ChatGPT, when used responsibly and critically, can enhance students' skills in writing essays.
