Abstract
This study explores how non-native English‐speaking especially gamers of the mobile RPG Arknights incidentally acquire English vocabulary through gameplay. Specifically, it examines (1) What vocabulary of the Arknights games are acquired by Arknights Gamers, and (2) What factors influence the level of vocabulary acquisition among Arknights players. A phenomenological qualitative design was employed. Data were gathered from 100 players via open-ended questionnaires and follow-up unstructured interviews; all participants had played Arknights for at least three weeks. Transcripts and written responses were analysed thematically to uncover recurring patterns of vocabulary exposure and meaning-making. Findings indicate that players mostly acquired words on core interface terms—such as store, mission, base, recruit, squad, and operator—through repeated menu exposure. They also internalize select narrative words (e.g. catastrophe, infected, dokutah) by inferring meaning from cut-scene dialogues. Key factors driving acquisition include repetition, multimodal input (text + icons/audio), narrative immersion, and clear interface prompts. These results demonstrate that Arknights provides a context-rich environment that fosters incidental English vocabulary learning, supporting Krashen’s Input Hypothesis, Paivio’s Dual Coding Theory, and some others previous studies. Keywords: incidental vocabulary acquisition, phenomenological study, Arknights, digital game learning, multimodal input, repetition
