Abstract

Tazkiya, Pramesti Nur. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Animated Short Videos in Teaching Speaking Skills for 8th Grade Students of SMPN 9 Magelang in the Academic Year 2024/2025. A Graduating Paper. Teacher Training and Educational Faculty. English Education Department. State Islamic University (UIN) Salatiga Counselor: Ahmad Samingan, M.Pd. The objectives of the study are to find out the effectiveness and to define the significance of using animated short videos in teaching speaking skills to the eighth-grade students of SMPN 9 Magelang in the academic year 2024/2025. This study aims to determine whether animated short videos can improve students' speaking performance, especially in aspects of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The methodology of this research was a quantitative research, especially a quasi-experimental study. The technique of collecting data was an oral test given as a pre-test and post-test. The population of the study was all eighth-grade students, totaling 222 students, and the sample consisted of 64 students selected through purposive sampling. The students were divided into two groups: the experimental class was taught using animated short videos, and the control class was taught using Lecturing methods without media. Before the treatment, both groups showed a similar level of competence as indicated by the average scores of the pre-test were 60.78 for the experimental class and 60.41 for the control class. This similarity confirms that both groups had relatively equal speaking abilities at the beginning of the study. The writer finds that there is a significant difference in speaking scores between the two groups after the treatment. The average post-test score of the experimental class was 77.00, while the control class was 67.84. The result of the Independent Sample T-Test shows that t-count (7.877) > t-table (2.000), with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, animated short videos are effective in improving students’ speaking skills..
