Abstract
Choirunnisa, D. A. (2025). Exploring The Role Of Grammarly In Supporting Research Proposal Writing: A Retrospective Study Among English Department Students (Case study of English language education students UIN Salatiga). A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Norwanto S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D. This study investigates the perception of the role of Grammarly as a writing support tool in enhancing English Department students’ academic proposal writing, specifically in terms of grammar accuracy, vocabulary use, coherence, also know the differences of the proposal writing quality before and after using Grammarly. Using a retrospective mixed-method design, the research involved 30 students from the English Education Program at UIN Salatiga in the academic year 2024/2025. Data were collected through questionnaires and document analysis comparing students' proposal drafts before and after using Grammarly. The quantitative findings reveal that 82.32% of the students gave positive perceptions of Grammarly. Specifically, 98% agreed that Grammarly improved the readability of their proposals, 94% said it helped correct grammar accurately, and 91% stated it improved the logical flow of ideas. Moreover, 93% agreed that Grammarly suggested appropriate academic diction, and 92% acknowledged that it improved sentence structure efficiency. Additionally, 96% of students agreed that the application was easy and practical to use. Qualitative analysis of three student proposals showed a significant reduction in grammar, structure, and readability errors after using Grammarly, although the tool was less effective in improving deeper logical coherence. Overall, the study concludes that Grammarly is a helpful support tool for ESL learners in proposal writing, though it should be used alongside critical thinking and guidance from lecturers. Keywords: Student’s Perception, Grammarly; Retrospective Study.
