Abstract

Humor plays a powerful role in shaping classroom dynamics, especially in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. This research investigates how teachers use humor in EFL classrooms at SMKN 2 Salatiga during the academic year of 2023/2024. It aims to explore the types of humor teachers apply, how those humorous expressions are structured, and what impacts they have on the teaching-learning process. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach involving classroom observations with two EFL teachers. The findings reveal that teachers primarily use anecdotes, spontaneous jokes, and culturally relevant puns to engage students. These humorous elements are often structured with setups and punchlines, similar to stand-up comedy, making the lessons more relatable and enjoyable. Students responded positively, showing increased attention, reduced anxiety, and better classroom interaction. However, the research also highlights that humor must be used carefully to avoid misinterpretation. This study concludes that humor used by teachers in EFL classrooms at SMKN 2 Salatiga plays a significant role in enhancing the teaching and learning experience.
