Abstract
Devi Ike Novia Rahayu. 2026. The Correlation between The Students' Novel Reading Interest and Their Reading Comprehension Skills among Seventh-Semester English Education Department Students at UIN Salatiga. A Graduating Paper. English Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. State Islamic University of Salatiga. Counselor: Suesthi Maharani, M. Pd. This study investigates the correlation between the students' novel reading interest and their reading comprehension skills among seventh-semester English Education students at UIN Salatiga. This research aimed to analyze students' novel reading interest and their reading skills, and to determine if a significant correlation exists between these two variables. A quantitative correlational research design was employed, utilizing questionnaires to assess novel reading interest and multiple-choice tests for reading comprehension skills. The sample consisted of 31 seventh-semester students from class 7C at UIN Salatiga, selected through purposive sampling due to their prior experience with novels as a learning medium. Data collection involved a 20-question questionnaire and a reading test, both validated and tested for reliability The findings showed that students had moderately high in novel reading interest (mean = 57) and good reading comprehension skills (mean = 84.93). However, Pearson correlation analysis revealed no significant relationship (r = 0.129, p = 0.490 > 0.05), leading to acceptance of the null hypothesis. This indicates that novel reading interest does not substantially affect reading comprehension skills, as the relationship is very weak and statistically insignificant. Keywords: A Correlation Study; Student Novel Reading Interest; Reading Comprehension; English Education Department Student; UIN Salatiga
