Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out how yes/no questions used pragmatically and to find out the most frequent yes/no questions used pragmatically with reference to the main characters dialogs of the movie entitled 10 Cloverfield Lane. The methodology of research was descriptive qualitative research. The technique of collecting data was Cornell Notes Taking System. The finding shows that yes/no questions pragmatically used in four different categories: (1) Yes/no questions with direct yes/no responses, (2) Yes/no questions with indirect responses but tightly referring direct yes/no responses, (3) Yes/no questions with indirect speech acts responses, and (4) general speech acts used in yes/no questions. Among the four categories, the indirect speech acts of yes/no questions are the most frequent category appears pragmatically with reference to the main characters dialogs in the 10 Cloverfield Lane.
