Abstract
The objectives of the study are to find out the dominant type of anxiety students in English speaking mastery, the factors causing anxiety in speaking English, the effects of anxiety on speaking performance, and the strategies to overcome the anxiety of the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2017/2018. The methodology of research was quantitative research especially descriptive study. The techniques of collecting data were Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and open ended questionnaire. FLCAS questionnaire is adopted from Horwitz, Horwitz, and Cope (1986) to find out the dominant type of anxiety students in English speaking mastery. Meanwhile, open ended questionnaire to find out the factors causing anxiety in speaking English, the effects of anxiety on speaking performance, and the strategies of the fourth semester students to overcome the anxiety. The results of the research show that, first, there is no absolute dominant type of anxiety at the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga in the academic year 2017/2018 in English speaking mastery. The finding shows that fear of negative evaluation has the highest percentage (38%). It only has a slight difference with communication apprehension (33%), and test anxiety (30%). Second, there are four factors causing anxiety in speaking English at the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. They are communication apprehension (61,72%), fear of negative evaluation (12,78%), linguistic problems (59,58%), and lack of preparation (21,29%). Third, there are six effects of anxiety on speaking performance at the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. Those are physical problems (8,52%), psychological problems (70,25%), hopelessness (2,13%), achievements (8,52%), performances (40,44%), and linguistic problems (6,39%). The last result is the strategies in overcoming anxiety in speaking English used by the fourth semester students of English Education Department of IAIN Salatiga. The strategies are linguistic improvements (72,37%), mental attitudes (34,06%), self preparation (21,29%), join in language group (2,13%), and take a deep breath (6,39%). Key Words: Speaking; Anxiety
