State Institute for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Faizal Risdianto, S.S., M.Hum. Keywords: Illocutionary act, Novel, Searle‟s Category, Meaning This study is mainly to describe the illocutionary act type by Searle‟s category of the utterances in the novel „Port Royal‟ by Linda Chaikin. The objectives of the study namely, (1) to find out what are the types of illocutionary acts in the novel, (2) to know what is the implication of the result of the study for English Language Teaching. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method to classify and analyze the utterances. The findings of this research are 440 utterances. Based on Searle‟s category there are five categories of illocutionary act, representatives, directives, expressive, commissives, and declaratives. After the analyze, the researchers found that representatives was dominant in the novel especially informing. The main reason people studying about speech act are to understanding what the people mean when they make conversation and to reduce misunderstanding about the meaning. The implication of the result of this research is it could be authentic material by teachers or lecturers to teach speech acts especially about illocutionary act
