Abstract

ABSTRACT Astanti, Novi. 2019. The Use of Story Map to Improve Students’ Writing Skills on recount Text (A Classroom Action Research of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Islam Ar-Rahmah Suruh in the Academic Year 2018/2019). Counselor: Dr. Mashlihatul Umami, M.A Key Words: Story Map, Writing Skills, Recount text This research is aimed to improve the students writing skills on recount text of second grade students of SMP Islam Ar-Rahmah Suruh in the academic year 2018/2019. The objectives of this research is to improve the students writing skills on recount text using Story Map. Based on the results of observation, there is a prior tendency learning of how to write, the students are lack of writing interest and motivation. Therefore, the students have difficulties to develop their writing. In order to improve students’ writing skills on recount text, an interesting learning method must be conducted. In this research, the researcher uses story map. The methodology of the research is classroom action research which consists of two cycles. The data source of this research are 27 students. The researcher uses observation sheet and documentation. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of Story Map, the improvement afterwards, and how far is the improvement. The research is conducted in two cycles. The results of this research are the findings in cycle II is higher than the passing grade of SMP Islam Ar-Rahmah Suruh on score 75 in the academic year 2018/2019. The average score of post-test in cycle I is 71.67 and the average score of post-test in cycle II is 78.14. The target is 75% of students in the class can pass the minimum criteria of writing skills. In the post-test of cycle I only 51.85 % students who pass the passing grade. The target is not achieved by the students in the cycle I. Therefore, in the post-test of cycle II, there is 85.18% students can pass the passing grade. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that the implementation of Story Map is successfully improve the students writing skills on recount text of second grade students of SMP Islam Ar-Rahmah Suruh in the academic year 2018/2019.
