Abstract
Fatihah, Anisha Nur. 2019. Using Pop Culture to Improve Students’ Writing Skills at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. A Graduating Paper, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Salatiga. Counselor: Dr. Mashlihatul Umami, M.A. The objectives of the study are to find out whether the implementation of pop culture as media can improve students’ writing skills or not and find out how far does the use of pop culture as media improves students’ writing skills. This research generally answer three questions as (1) How is the implementation of pop culture as media to improve students' writing skills at the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen? (2) Is there any improvement of students’ writing skills after using pop culture as media for the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen? (3) How far does the use of pop culture as media improve students' writing skills at the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen? The method of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). It consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four steps, they were: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of hotel accommodation C of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen. The data collected were qualitative and quantitative data. The researcher used SPSS 16.00 for analysing the test. The result of this research shows that in the cycles I and II, the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of pre-test. The mean of post-test I is 45.18 and the pre-test I is 50.61. The mean of post-test II is 63.97 and the pre-test II is 54.97. Moreover, the result of t-test in cycle I is 2.239 and cycle II is 4.138. The significance improvement from the cycle I to cycle II is 43.4%. From the result, the researcher concluded that using pop culture as media can improve students’ writing skills at the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Bawen.
