Abstract

This research aims to figure out the way IAIN Salatiga students 2019 give compliment and compliment response, as well as to point out the interference of Leech’s Politeness Principle and Andhap Asor towards compliment and compliment response given by IAIN Salatiga students 2019. This is a qualitative research. Data collection techniques used in this research are questionnaire, Whatsapp chat screenshot, and experimental video. After conducting the research, the researcher found some types how the participants gave compliments, such as: saying “congratulations”, without saying “congratulations”, mitigated compliments, and other responses. The researcher found types how participants gave compliment responses, such as: appreciation token, scale down, re-assignment, praise upgrade, return, question, and no acknowledgement. The participants obeyed approbation maxim and modesty maxim. Whereas, the some participants violated approbation maxim, modesty maxim, tact maxim, and generosity maxim. The majority participant obeyed the value of andhap asor.
