Abstract

This study is aimed atdescribing discourse studies especially in cohesion and speech act theory from comicstrip. This is literary research, so the writer uses descriptive qualitative approach. Inthis research, documentation and note talcing technique are used to collect the data.There are two objectives of the research, namely: 1) to find out the types of cohesionused in Dilbert's comic strip issued by Kompas in April-May 2009, 2) to find out thetypes of speech act used in Dilbert's comic strip issued by Kompas in April-May2009. After investigating the English sentences used in daily comic strip issued inKompas in April-May 2009, the writer found several findings as follows: 1) based onanalysis of speech act, the writer found that there are many speech acts found inDilbert comic strip issued by Kompas in April-May 2009. They are: 99 direct speechacts, l I indirect speech acts, 109 literal speech acts and 1 nonliteral speech act, 2)Based on analysis of cohesion, the writer found that there are many cohesions foundin Dilbert comic strip issued by Kompas in April-May 2009. They are 15 utterancesof substitutions, 3 ellipsis, 86 references, 28 conjunctions, I antonym and 4 ofcollocations. However, the writer expects that it is able to contribute the science oflinguistic and able to be guidance for her and all readers.
