Abstract

This study aimed at describing English noun phrase found in opinioncolumn at The Jakarta post. There are three objective of the research namely: I)To describe the sentence pattern of English noun phrase in sentences used inopinion column issued by The Jakarta post Saturday, February 19, 2011 edition,2) To find out the type sentences of English noun phrase used in opinion columnissued by The Jakarta post Saturday, February 19, 2011 edition, 3) To know theform of English noun phrase used in opinion column issued by The Jakarta postSaturday, February 19, 2011 edition. After investigating the English noun phraseused in opinion column issued by The Jakarta post Saturday, February t 9, 2011edition, the writer found several findings as follows: I) five patterns used inopinion column issued by The Jakarta post Saturday, February 19, 2011 edition;they are S+P, S+P+o, S+P+C, S+P+O+c and S+P+o+ Adv, 2) Two kinds ofsentences based on the type sentence by purpose, they are declarative andinterrogative sentences and three kinds of sentences based on the number of fullpredication or by construction, they are simple, compound, and complexsentences, 3) Based on the form of English noun phrase, the writer finds seventynine form English noun phrase. They are by adding adjective, past participle andnoun phrase it self, all of the modifier in front of the head word. Then, behind thehead word, the writer finds some modifier by adding a group of preposition, verbto infinitive, adverb, and by adding relative sub clause. This graduating paper isnot absolutely perfect, so she completely receives all constructive criticism.However the writer expects that is able to contribute the science of linguistic andable to be guidance for her and all readers.
