Abstract
The aims of this research are (1) to find out rhetorical messages of character building values in the Jakarta Post and (2) to analyze kinds of short functional texts in the Jakarta Post. The research method that is used in this research is qualitative research. The object of the study is Jakarta Post edition 09-14 February and 09-14 March 2015. The technique of collecting data that is applied by the writer is documentation method. After analyze the data, the writer found several findings based on the analysis rhetorical messages of character building and kinds of short functional texts in the Jakarta Post. There are three of characters values that found in the Jakarta Post that are trustworthiness, caring, and responsibility and 563 rhetorical messages of characters building found in short functional texts. Overall found 569 characters building. The writer also found kinds 1018 kinds of short functional texts such as advertisement occupies the highest position 98. 3%. Announcement is about 0. 54%, invitation card 0. 81%.
